Description
of the School
The
Harlan Community School District consists of the Harlan Community High
School (9-12), the Harlan Community Middle School (6-8), New Park
Elementary School (PreSchool-3), and West Ridge Elementary School (K-5).
The school district mascot
is the Cyclone. The district colors are red and black.
West
Ridge Elementary School provides a caring learning environment where all
students are provided the opportunity to reach their learning potential.
The dedicated staff members work closely with one another and with the
parents and the community to provide students with a variety of
effective educational experiences.
Attention
is given to the behavioral, emotional, and social needs of each student
along with an academic emphasis. Teachers and support staff
foster growth through reading, math, science and social studies, working
diligently to meet each student's individual needs. There is also a
strong emphasis in the areas of art, music, and physical education.
A
variety of support programs such as Title 1 Reading, library services,
the Revolving Door Talented and Gifted Program, accelerated math
classes, and inclusive special education programs are offered. Student
activities in the upper grades include honor choir and band.
A
30-station PC computer lab and a computer in every classroom demonstrate
our commitment to offering the latest in technology to every student.
Family
activities throughout the year demonstrate the value placed on the
home/school partnership. We are proud of our commitment to the
future citizens of the Harlan community and we extend a welcome to you
to visit our school.
